Create or edit a routine on web or phone
Use the web app or the iPhone or Android app to create a routine or change an existing one for your home. The routine you save belongs to the selected home and is shared across your devices.
- Open Routines for your home on the web app or on your iPhone or Android app.
- Create a new routine or open an existing routine to edit it.
- Set the routine name, then review the three parts of the routine: When, Only if, and Do.
- In When, add any triggers you want. If you leave When empty, the routine runs only when you start it yourself.
- In Only if, add any conditions you want. If you leave Only if empty, the routine can run anytime its trigger happens or anytime you run it yourself.
- In Do, add the steps you want in the order you want them to happen. A routine must have at least one step.
- Save the routine.
Use the same routine on your devices
After you save a routine, you use that same saved routine across your devices for the same home. There is no separate TV copy or widget copy of the routine.
- On web, you can open and run the saved routine for the selected home.
- On iPhone and Android, you can open and run the same saved routine for the selected home.
- On TV, you can use eligible saved routines from your home.
- Supported widgets can use the saved routine from your home.
- Voice can start a saved routine when its phrase matches, or when you run it another supported way.
TV and widgets expose eligible use, not a separate routine copy.
What you should see after saving
- The routine appears as one saved routine in your home, not as different versions for different devices.
- Its saved definition includes When, Only if, and Do.
- The same routine can be opened or used from supported surfaces for that home.
- If the routine has no triggers in When, it is still available to run manually.
- If the routine includes waits, those waits stay part of the saved routine order.
The hub stores and executes the routine. Local actions can work without internet while cloud-dependent steps still need their provider.
If you edit a routine later
When you edit a saved routine on web or phone, you are changing the same routine used across your devices for that home.
- Preserve existing settings when editing.
- A change made elsewhere refreshes an untouched editor; if you have unsaved edits, review the conflict instead of overwriting the newer definition.
- Run-history updates alone do not mean the definition changed.
- Saving or editing a routine does not require reflashing the hub.
Understand routine timing and results
Saved routines keep their step order. Explicit waits and dependencies remain meaningful; protocol scheduling must not reorder those boundaries.
If your routine includes a spoken message, the message uses its selected room and message volume, restoring prior speaker state afterward.
If your routine turns on a coffee machine and is set to wait for the ready announcement, following actions can stay paused until the machine is ready. A coffee-ready announcement can hold following actions until ready; distinguish that deliberate wait from a failed run.
When you run a routine, review pending versus confirmed results and the actual failed step rather than assuming a Run now acknowledgement means completion.
