Use the controls on your thermostat or fan device to change heating, cooling, and fan settings in your home. What you can change depends on the specific device you open, and only that device’s returned controls are shown.

Adjust heating or cooling

Target is the temperature you want, not the room temperature you are currently measuring. A thermostat may show only the mode options that it supports: Off, Heat, Cool, or Auto.

  1. Open the device and make sure it is the correct thermostat for your home and room.
  2. Set Target to the temperature you want.Target
  3. If needed, change Mode to one of the options shown for that thermostat: Off, Heat, Cool, or Auto.Mode
  4. If the thermostat shows Fan, choose the fan option shown for that device. Thermostat fan options are Auto and On.Fan
  5. If the thermostat shows Hold, use it only when you want the current setting to stay in place.Hold

Adjust a fan device

Fan devices can expose Power, Speed, Oscillate, and their own Preset choices. Use only the controls shown on the fan you opened.

  1. Open the fan device in the correct home and room.
  2. Use Power to turn the fan on or off.Power
  3. Use Speed to choose the available fan speed.Speed
  4. Use Oscillate if the fan supports that setting.Oscillate
  5. Use Preset only if the fan shows preset choices.Preset

If a change does not seem to work

  • Unknown means no valid reading, not Off or zero.
  • Do not repeat the same action many times to diagnose a failed read.
  • If the device is unreachable, check power and the displayed connection.
  • Use Support with the room, device name, and the problem you observed.

If a specialized phone app uses different wording for a control, follow the wording shown on your screen for that device. Do not infer a gesture or a hidden action from the generic labels here.
