Understand your home sensors

Use the sensor pages in ALYT to open a device, read its current report, and understand when a value is unknown, read-only, or waiting for a new report.

Open the sensor you want to check

Open Home or Devices, then select the correct sensor or device. The page only shows capabilities that the device actually returned, so you may see different readings on different devices. A reading marked read-only cannot be changed from this screen.

  1. Open your home in ALYT.
  2. Choose Home or Devices.
  3. Select the sensor or device name you want to inspect.

Read the reported values

The device page shows the sensor's current report. Depending on the device, you may see Motion, Last motion, Open, Vibration, Temperature, Humidity, Air quality index, CO2, VOC, PM2.5, Water detected, Smoke alarm, CO alarm, Light level, Home, or Since. These are report values, not controls.

If the page says Unknown, the device has not provided a valid reading yet. Do not treat Unknown as zero, Off, or a safe state. If a sensor shows Vibration detected, that is the current report. If it shows No recent vibration, the device is not reporting a recent event.

For a vibration sensor, Latest report shows the latest report time, and Last vibration shows the last detection time. Battery unknown means the device has not reported a battery value. battery sensors may sleep between reports, so a quiet device can still be working.

Understand room sensors that measure temperature and motion

Some room sensors report both temperature and motion. In that case, the page leads with the temperature in your chosen units, and motion appears as a small figure rather than a separate control. A thermostat that notices motion uses the same idea.

A sensor that only notices motion keeps its own motion reading. A room sensor that reports temperature and motion does not mean a person is home, and it does not mean Home Security is watching the room.

What you can and cannot do

These sensor readings are for checking the home, not changing it. The values on this page are read-only. If a device also has settings you can change, those settings appear separately and only when your account has permission for them.

If the device page includes Reconnect, that action belongs to the connection or network details, not to the sensor reading itself. It is only available on devices that support it.

What you should see afterwards

After you open a sensor, you should see the device name and the readings it actually reported. A supported sensor may show a current value, a last-event time, or Unknown if nothing valid has arrived yet. If the device supports vibration reporting, the page may also show Vibration, Vibration detected, No recent vibration, Latest report, Last vibration, and Battery unknown in the vibration section.

Troubleshooting

If a value stays Unknown, refresh the page and check whether the device is online. If the device is offline, the page may keep the last report until new data arrives.

If you expected a new vibration or motion report and do not see one, wait for the next report from the device. Some devices report only when they wake or detect an event.

If you cannot find Reconnect, your device does not currently offer that action. If you cannot change a setting, you may be looking at read-only data, or your account may not have the needed permission for that home.
