Control speakers and room playback

WebiPhoneAndroid

Control volume, playback, and speaker grouping for your home’s speakers from the speaker page or Music page. The controls you see depend on the speaker and on what the service currently reports.

Open the speaker you want to control

Open Home or Devices, then open the speaker. On the speaker page, you can also open Music for playback choices. The page shows only the controls that this speaker currently supports.

  1. Open Home or Devices.
  2. Select the speaker you want to control.
  3. Use the speaker page for volume and transport, or open Music if you want to choose what plays.

Adjust one speaker

Use Volume and Muted to control the selected speaker. Volume changes the speaker level. Muted silences the speaker without changing the current playback source.

  1. On the speaker page, move Volume to the level you want.Volume
  2. Select Muted to silence the speaker, or clear Muted to hear it again.Muted
  3. If the speaker shows Play, Pause, Next, or Previous, use those controls only when they are visible on that speaker.PlayPlayPauseNext

Move through playback

Play starts or resumes playback on the selected speaker. Pause stops playback. Next and Previous move through the current queue when the service reports those controls. Position is a seek control only when the current track supports seeking.

  1. Use Play to start or resume playback.PlayPlay
  2. Use Pause to stop playback.Pause
  3. Use Next or Previous if they are shown for this speaker.NextPrevious
  4. Use Position only when the current item has a seekable position.Position

Use the playback readings

Playing, Elapsed, Length, and Position read at are readings, not controls. Use them to check what the speaker is reporting. A reading can lag behind a recent action until the home confirms the new state.

  • Playing tells you whether the speaker reports that it is playing.
  • Elapsed shows the current playback position.
  • Length shows the current track length when the source provides it.
  • Position read at shows when the position reading was taken.

Group speakers for room playback

Open Playing together to choose which speakers should play as one. Use Everyone's volume and Everyone muted to control the whole group. Grouped with is a reading that shows which speakers are currently linked with the selected speaker.

  1. Open Playing together on the speaker page.PlayPlayPlaying together
  2. Select the speakers you want in the group.
  3. Use Everyone's volume to change the group level.Everyone's volume
  4. Use Everyone muted to silence or restore the whole group.Everyone muted
  5. Check Grouped with if you want to confirm which speakers are linked.

Choose music

Open Music, then choose the speaker and the music source. If the service offers favourites or a library, select what you want to play. The exact list depends on the speaker and the connected service.

  1. Open Music.
  2. Choose the speaker you want to use.
  3. Select the music source or favourite you want to play.
  4. If the speaker shows a Music page with a list, choose an item from that list.

What to expect after a change

After you change a control, the screen may show the new request before the speaker finishes reporting it back. The reading can stay unchanged for a short time, especially for group changes or playback changes. Wait for the speaker’s reported state before changing the same control again.

  • Volume and Muted should match the new level or mute state after the speaker reports it.
  • Play or Pause should change the Playing reading when the speaker confirms the action.
  • Group changes should be reflected in Playing together and Grouped with after the home updates.

Troubleshooting

If a control is missing, the speaker does not currently report that capability. If Position is not shown, the current source may not support seeking. If Next or Previous are missing, the current transport may not offer them. If the speaker seems stuck, check the latest reading and wait for the home to update before trying again.

  • Missing Volume, Muted, Play, Pause, Next, Previous, Position, Playing together, Everyone's volume, or Everyone muted means the speaker did not report that control.
  • Unknown means the speaker has not reported a valid reading yet; it does not mean Off or zero.
  • If a group change or playback change does not appear immediately, wait for the speaker to report back before repeating the action.
  • If the speaker is offline, check its power and the connection shown on the device page.
